What is Jumpin Rides?
Jumpin Rides is an online platform for carpooling (or ridesharing), which connects drivers with empty seats to passengers looking for a ride. It has been active in South Africa since July 2016 and it is part of the start-up incubator and accelerator, Far Ventures Global.
What is carpooling?
Carpooling, sometimes called “ridesharing” or “lift club”, is the sharing of car journeys with several people going the same way. Drivers offer their spare seats to passengers, and those in need of a ride can search for drivers offering to share a ride. All trip costs are shared equally between the passengers, such as fuel and toll fees.
What are the advantages of carpooling?
Carpooling has many advantages!
1. Carpooling saves you money, as fuel and toll fees are shared equally between passengers.
2. Carpooling helps to reduce our carbon footprint and Co2 emissions, making for a healthier planet.
3. Carpooling reduces traffic congestion on the roads and the need in parking spaces: you get to places quicker, and there are often dedicated carpooling parking spots.
4. Carpooling is a way to meet new people, experience new perspectives and potentially create long-standing friendships.
Can I find a lift club for commuting on Jumpin Rides?
Our core focus is to help people travelling throughout South Africa, particularly medium and long distance trips (e.g. 40km +). However, you can also share rides for shorter distances, such as to work or university. Carpooling is great in whatever form!
How can I sign up?
Registration only takes a few clicks: Click “Sign In”, located on the top-right of the homepage. You’ll be asked to sign in with your Facebook account. That helps us to verify your identity, and ensure your safety.
After signing up, we advise you to complete as much as possible your profile in order to increase your chances to find a passenger or a driver. We strongly advise you to verify your email address and mobile number to improve your Reliability Counter.
I do not have Facebook. How can I sign up?
Unfortunately, we require you to have a Facebook account to register. Your Facebook profile forms a part of our identity verification process, which is to ensure your safety on shared rides.
Why do you need my personal information?
Safety is our priority, and your personal information is used for this purpose. It forms a part of your Reliability Counter, so that fellow drivers/passengers can decide whom they want to share a ride with. The more information you provide, the higher your Reliability Counter is, and the more likely you are to find people to carpool.
Moreover, some information is mandatory to proceed to the online payment of the ride on the platform:
- The user’s full name;
- The user’s email address;
- The user’s ID/passport number;
- the user’s banking account details
The information above will only be shared with TradeSafe in order to process the payment in the safest and the more transparent way possible.
TradeSafe consider all user/customer data as sensitive information. TradeSafe will keep confidential all customer data it receives from the Jumpin Rides platform. TradeSafe will not furnish, make available or disclose any customer information to any party, except when and only when it is required by law. TradeSafe will not sell or trade any customer information or participate in any market related efforts that will require the use of customer data.
To find more information about TradeSafe, find here a link to their terms and conditions of use: TradeSafe T&Cs
Who can see my personal information?
Other users do not have access to your personal information. Users (meaning those who are registered in the same way you have) can only view your name, profile photo and age.
Who can see my telephone number?
Only drivers and passengers approved by you can view your telephone number. This is so that they can contact you to discuss further details of your trip.
Why do you need my email address?
We require your email address to send you notifications and inform you about the details of your ride. For example, when someone requests to be a passenger in your car, or if someone offers a ride that you’re looking for. We don’t spam, promise; emails received will only contain important information or will be related to our monthly newsletters to keep connected with us.
Why do you need to verify my ID number and my email?
We verify your ID number as part of our security process to ensure that the information you provide us corresponds to your true ID. While this security process may appear to be constraining, it ensures us that each profile corresponds to the true and good person. Moreover, this information is required by our partner TradeSafe to proceed the payment safely and carefully. We verify also your email address to ensure it is correct and to ease your experience on Jumpin Rides.
Is it free to sign up on the website?
Yes, it is completely free to sign up on the Jumpin Rides platform. The only costs you will incur are those shared with other passengers for travel costs and the booking fees for the online payment.
How is the price set up for a trip?
Our prices per passenger are calculated as follows: Price per seat per kilometre multiplied by the number of kilometres.
The car use’s cost per kilometre amounts to R 3,55 per kilometre. Why R3,55 per kilometre? R3,55 per kilometre is the price settled for this year by the Minister of Finance for the refund travel allowance for employees in respect of travelling expenses for business purposes, corresponding to the true cost of the car use per kilometre. This price incorporates: fuel, depreciation, insurance, repairs, maintenance. Only the interest expense of the car, tolls and parking are not incorporated. Here is the link to find this information: click here
Then we divide this cost by 4, the number of seats in the car: 3 seats offered maximum per ride, plus the driver. We choose to limit the number of seat offered to 3 per car, to prevent drivers making money by carpooling and for travel comfort.
So the price per seat per kilometre amounts to R0,89, multiplied by the number of the kilometres of the ride.
Please note there is a minimum price of R 10.00 per seat payable to the driver regardless the distance.
How are users rated?
Every time you’ve shared a ride with someone, you will be asked to give a short review of your travel companion(s) and rate them out of 5. Your review and rating of a passenger/driver will be visible to other registered users so that they can make an informed decision about whom they want to travel with.
Can I only go to festivals with Jumpin Rides?
No, you can go wherever you want! Jumpin Rides creates customized pages for festivals to make it easier for you to find a ride to those specific events. If you’re just looking to share a ride to somewhere in South Africa, use the general pages for posting a ride offer or requesting a ride.
How can I write to a passenger?
You can only contact a passenger directly once you have been contacted by the passenger about your ride offer. This takes place on the platform. After you have approved its ride request, you will have access to their contact details to finalize the details of the trip. Until then, you can only use the platform to communicate.
Is it possible to cancel a trip?
Yes. All you need to do is select the trip you want to cancel under the “Rides Offered” tab and click ‘Delete’. If a passenger has booked the ride already, you can still delete it and he or she will receive an email notification. The passenger(s) will be then fully refunded the whole of the sum paid and you will not receive any sum of any nature.
We suggest you send a message to those who have booked a ride with you to briefly explain the circumstances around your cancellation; this will hopefully prevent you from receiving a negative rating and review.
What if a passenger cancels their booking?
If a passenger cancels their booking on the website, you will receive an email notification to advise you of the change. There are then 3 situations:
• If the passenger cancels more than 24 hours before the planned departure time, he or she shall only be refunded the cost contribution to the ride. Jumpin Rides keep their booking fees, and the driver does not receive any sum of any nature;
• If the passenger cancels 24 hours or less before the planned departure time and thirty minutes or less after the booking confirmation, he or she shall only be refunded the cost contribution to the ride. Jumpin Rides keep their booking fees and the driver does not receive any sum of any nature;
• If the passenger cancels 24 hours or less before the planned departure time and more than thirty minutes after the booking confirmation, he or she shall only be refunded half of the cost contribution to the ride paid at the time of booking. Jumpin Rides keep their booking fees, and the driver receives 50% of the cost contribution paid by the passenger at the time of booking;
How will I be paid?
Jumpin Rides will make payment to drivers twice a month, on the 10th and the 25th of each month. Should those dates fall on a public holiday or weekend then payment will occur on the next working day following those dates. All paid trips that occur between the 1st and the 15th of the month shall be paid on the 25th of the same month. All paid trips that occur between the 16th and the 31st of the month shall be paid on the 10th of the following month.
No payment shall be made to the Driver unless the Driver provides Jumpin Rides with his or her bank details. You must enter your bank details on your Jumpin Rides account. The Driver’s bank details are stored on "Profile", "Bank details" and not available to the public.
Jumpin Rides shall not pay the Amount due otherwise than by bank transfer, thereby excluding any payment in cash or by cheque. Jumpin Rides will only make a payment for amounts in excess of R50.00. Should your payment due to you be less than this amount then you will need to wait until the amount owing to you exceeds R50.00. However, should you discontinue using Jumpin Rides then you may request that we pay you out any amount owing should it be less than R 50.00.
Can I offer a ride for someone else?
We do not recommend offering a ride on behalf of someone else. We strongly encourage every driver to create his or her own profile, in order to ensure everyone’s safety.
How do I find a ride?
The platform has an internal search engine to browse through all ride offers posted. From the homepage, search for a ride by inserting your address of departure and arrival in the specified fields. You’ll then be shown a list of ride offers that are going in the same direction, or are travelling to the same destination. If there are not any ride offers matching your expectations, we strongly advise you to check regularly the platform.
How do I choose a driver?
When searching for a ride offer, you’ll be able to view basic details of the driver (name, age and profile photo). You’ll also be able to view their Reliability Counter (how much information they’ve provided us with to verify their identity) and written reviews and ratings from others who have shared a ride with them before. Choose your driver based on this information. Remember: they also have to approve your request! So it’s just as important that you are a respectful and reliable passenger.
How can I message a driver?
When you want to book a ride offer, you will be asked to send a message to the driver through the platform explaining the reasons why you want to book the ride. You can’t confirm you booking without leaving a message to the driver.
You will have access to the contact details of the driver once the driver will have accepted and confirmed your ride request to finalize the last details before the ride.
Please note that you can also message directly the driver through the platform before making the booking if you still have questions about the ride offer.
What do I do if there is no ride available?
Jumpin Rides is growing quickly and so is the number of rides. However, if you are unable to find others to share a ride with, an alert email will automatically come through once you have found a potential ride match.
How much does it cost to share a ride? Are there booking fees?
It is completely free to sign up on the Jumpin Rides platform. The only costs are those of the trip, shared equally among the other people in your ride share, as well as a booking fee of 20% added to the price of the ride per seat. The price breakdown of the ride accessible when the passenger pays online. Please note there is a minimum price of R10.00 per seat payable to the driver regardless the distance and that it is illegal for drivers to make money on carpooling.
Can I book a seat for someone else?
Jumpin Rides puts you in touch with drivers. Once you have requested a ride, you’ll be able to message the driver privately and let them know how many seats you require. However, we strongly encourage every passenger to create his or her own profile. This is to ensure the safety and reliability of all those sharing the ride.
How close to departure date can I request a ride?
There is no limit; you can request a ride right up until the departure day and time. However, we recommend you request the ride well in advance, to allow time for the driver to review your profile/rating, to approve your booking, and for you both to discuss the details of the trip.
What is an escrow payment system?
We opt for an escrow payment system. “Escrow account” is defined as a temporary pass through account held by a 3rd party during the process of a transaction between two parties. Our partner TradeSafe will provide then buyer and seller security by securely safeguarding the passengers’ funds in escrow until the driver suitably and adequately transports the passenger to his/her intended destination. At this moment, TradeSafe will only release the funds once it has received a letter of instruction from a registered arbitrator or a South African Court of Law;
Should TradeSafe not receive a response to the Goods/Services Accepted Email by the passenger within 24 hours of the trip, then it shall be deemed that the user accepted the goods/services. The deemed acceptance authorizes TradeSafe to release the funds to the driver and Jumpin Rides.
